The New Job

Not for me! I am enjoying developing my new position at my company. My husband recently began working full-time at a company in NH, running a project that he’s dreamed about doing for fun in his spare time. Yes, he is one of those people who really, truly, enjoys and gets satisfaction out of working. A curse and a blessing. :)

The new position brings with it some awesome perks. His health insurance is fully paid for by the company – and spouses, too! He signed up for it right away, and as soon as we have proof that we are covered, I’m going to cancel our current health insurance through my job. That’ll save us about $200 a month! Their 401(k) plan is very good as well, and he will be signing up for that in 3 months when he becomes eligible. Most importantly, he loves the work, the people, the office – everything. Everything, that is, except the commute.

We live in Massachusetts. The company is in New Hampshire. While the two states border each other, we don’t live anywhere near the border. It takes my husband and hour and 20 minutes to drive to work – one way. If there is no traffic or bad weather. He spends about 3 hours in the car for every day he drives to work. He has been working from home 1-2 days a week, but the other days can really wear him down, especially if he works late and doesn’t get home until 9:30. Not to mention the $300/mo we had to add to our gas budget.

The solution is to move. We knew we weren’t going to stay in our townhouse forever, but we aren’t quite ready to move yet. We need to finish off our debt, save up a down payment, and make some improvements to our townhouse before we can even consider trying to sell it and finding a new house. The advantage is, by moving to NH, we can buy a single family home a little bigger than our current place for the same amount of money. Of course, the downside will be trying to sell our house now in the less-than-ideal housing market. Hopefully that will improve some before we plan to move next summer.

Big changes going on here! Once the debt is gone, the savings and home improvement talk will begin!
